You can change your Apple Account password in Settings on a trusted Apple device or by signing in through Apple’s official account website. After the Apple password change, use the new password whenever a device, browser, or Apple service asks you to sign in again.

Apple ID is now called Apple Account. Your existing email address or phone number, password, devices, and services remain associated with the same account.

Where can you change your Apple Account password?

The safest place for an Apple Account password change is a trusted device: an iPhone, iPad, or Mac where you are already signed in. A trusted device is one Apple recognizes as belonging to you and can use to verify your identity.

You can also open {site}, sign in, select Sign-In and Security, and choose Password. Apple may redirect you to a trusted device when one is available. Use only Apple’s Settings, System Settings, account website, or Apple Support app for an Apple account change password request.

Before starting, have your device passcode or Mac login password ready. You may also need access to a trusted device or trusted phone number for two-factor authentication.

How do you change the password step by step?

  1. Sign in to your Apple Account using the email address or phone number connected to it.
  2. Complete any identity check shown by Apple. With two-factor authentication, this may include approving the sign-in on a trusted device or entering a verification code.
  3. Open Sign-In and Security, then select Password.
  4. Enter your current password if Apple requests it.
  5. Enter the new password, then enter it again to confirm that both entries match.
  6. Select the button that completes or saves the change.
  7. Wait for confirmation before closing the page or app.
  8. Test the new password by signing in when Apple next prompts you. Do not repeatedly try the old password, because too many failed attempts can temporarily lock the account.

The labels may vary slightly by device software, but the process always includes identity verification and confirmation of the new password. Searches such as “apple change password,” “apple password change,” and “apple login change password” all refer to this same account-security process.

How do you change the password when you are signed in on a device?

On an iPhone or iPad where you are already signed in:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Sign-In & Security.
  4. Tap Change Password.
  5. Enter the device passcode if requested.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter and confirm the new password.

On a Mac where you are already signed in:

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Click your name.
  3. Click Sign-In & Security.
  4. Click Change Password.
  5. Enter the password used to unlock the Mac if requested.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to finish the Apple account password change.

Apple may impose a security delay before allowing a critical account change when Stolen Device Protection applies. Follow the message shown on the device and try again after the stated delay.

What should you do if you forgot your current password?

If you cannot remember the current password, reset it instead of using the normal change-password screen. On a trusted iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and select Change Password; the device passcode can be used to verify you. On a trusted Mac, use the same section in System Settings and follow Apple’s reset prompts.

If you are signed out, select Forgot Password on Apple’s sign-in screen and follow the identity checks. You can also use the password-reset tool in the Apple Support app on a borrowed Apple device; choose the option for helping someone else so your account information is not saved there.

Account recovery is the longer verification process used when Apple cannot immediately confirm that you own the account. Use it only after trusted-device, trusted-number, and recovery-contact options have failed. Recovery can involve a waiting period, and Apple Support cannot shorten that security delay. Account recovery does not provide a way around two-factor authentication or access to someone else’s account.

What happens after you change your Apple password?

Some devices and Apple services may continue working without interruption, while others may ask for the new password. Enter the new password only in Apple’s device settings, Apple apps, or official sign-in screens.

Check the following places if you see repeated password prompts:

  • iCloud settings on each iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows computer you use;
  • the App Store and other Apple media apps;
  • Apple services opened in a browser;
  • approved third-party apps that use iCloud information, which may require a separate app-specific password.

A password change does not change the email address or phone number used for your Apple login. If a verification code is requested during a new sign-in, approve it only when you initiated the attempt.

What are the Apple Account password requirements?

An Apple Account password must meet Apple’s security rules. The password must:

  • contain at least eight characters;
  • include both letters and numbers;
  • not contain three or more identical characters in a row;
  • not be a commonly used password.

Apple may reject a password that does not meet current checks or that has already been associated with the account. A longer, unique password with punctuation is safer. Do not reuse a password from email, banking, social media, or another important account, and do not share the password or verification codes.

How do you get help when the password change fails?

First, confirm that the device has a working internet connection and that you are using the correct Apple Account email address or phone number. Check whether Apple reports a service interruption, then restart the device or browser and try the official process again.

If a verification code never arrives, request another code through the sign-in screen and check a trusted device or trusted phone number. Do not keep guessing codes or passwords.

If the account is locked, inactive, or disabled, follow the specific recovery message displayed by Apple. For unresolved problems, use the Get Support option on Apple Support and choose Apple Account or password assistance. Apple Support can explain the available verification steps, but it cannot bypass account security or complete ownership checks for you.
