You can password-protect some apps by using the app’s own lock or a supported iPhone, iPad, or Android privacy feature. Individual app locking is not available for every app, device, or operating-system version.

Before changing settings, confirm that the device has a screen-lock passcode, PIN, password, fingerprint, or face recognition set up.

Can You Add a Password to an App?

How to add a password to an app depends on four things: the device, operating-system version, app, and available privacy or parental-control features. An app lock is a feature that requires authentication before a protected app opens.

A device may offer one or more of these protections:

  • A system feature that locks or hides selected apps.
  • A PIN, password, or biometric lock inside the app.
  • A private space, restricted profile, or parental-control feature.
  • A device passcode that prevents anyone else from reaching any app.

Biometric authentication means confirming identity with a fingerprint or face scan. It usually relies on the device passcode, PIN, or password as a backup.

How Do You Add a Password to an App on iPhone or iPad?

On supported iOS and iPadOS versions, Apple lets users require Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode before an individual app opens. Some apps can also be hidden in a protected folder, although system apps and certain other apps may not support every option.

  1. Touch and hold the app icon on the Home Screen.
  2. Look for an option labeled Require Face ID, Require Touch ID, or Require Passcode.
  3. Select the available lock option and confirm your identity.
  4. Close the app and test the lock before handing the device to someone else.

If that option is missing, update iOS or iPadOS if an update is available and check whether the specific app can be locked. Screen Time can restrict app use with limits and a separate Screen Time passcode, but it does not work exactly like a dedicated lock in every situation. Guided Access can temporarily keep an iPhone or iPad inside one app; it does not place a separate password on another app.

How Do You Add a Password to an App on Android?

How to put a password on an app in Android varies by manufacturer and software version. Search the device’s Settings for terms such as App Lock, Private Space, Secure Folder, Privacy, Security, or Parental Controls.

  1. Open Settings and select the available security, privacy, or app-lock area.
  2. Follow the prompts to create or confirm a device PIN, password, or biometric method.
  3. Select the apps that should be protected or place them inside the protected space.
  4. Lock the screen, reopen the protected app, and confirm that authentication is required.

On supported Android versions, Private Space separates selected apps behind an additional lock. Some manufacturers provide their own protected folder or app-lock feature. Screen pinning only keeps the device focused on one app until it is unpinned; it does not add a separate password to every app.

How Do You Use an App’s Built-In Password Lock?

Some apps provide their own way to lock an app with a password, PIN, fingerprint, face scan, or reauthentication. Reauthentication means proving identity again even though the account is already signed in.

  1. Open the app while signed in.
  2. Open Settings, then look under Security, Privacy, Account, Passcode, App Lock, or Screen Lock.
  3. Select the available PIN, password, or biometric option.
  4. Choose when the app should lock, if the app presents that choice.
  5. Record any recovery information in a secure password manager, then test the lock.

An app PIN may be different from the account password and device passcode. Read the label carefully before changing or resetting any credential.

What Should You Do If App Lock Is Not Available?

If the device or app has no supported individual lock, use the strongest available access control instead of an unverified third-party app locker.

  • Protect the entire device with a strong passcode, PIN, or password and a short automatic-lock interval.
  • Use a separate user profile, guest profile, private space, or protected folder when the device supports one.
  • Use official parental controls when restricting a child’s access.
  • Sign out of sensitive apps and disable saved sign-in details on shared devices.
  • Hide notification previews so private messages and codes do not appear on the lock screen.
  • Remove a sensitive app from a shared device if no adequate protection is available.

How Do You Recover or Change an App Password?

To recover or change an app password, use the reset process shown inside the app or on its official sign-in screen. Do not repeatedly guess, because some services may temporarily restrict additional attempts.

  1. Identify whether the prompt requests an app PIN, account password, parental-control code, or device passcode.
  2. Select Forgot Password, Forgot PIN, Reset, or the equivalent official option.
  3. Complete identity verification using the recovery method already connected to the account.
  4. Create a new credential and store it securely.
  5. If no reset option appears, use the app publisher’s official help area or support option.

A device passcode usually cannot be reset through an individual app. Follow the device maker’s official recovery instructions if the lost credential unlocks the whole device.

Why Is App Password Protection Not Working?

Missing settings, unsupported apps, forgotten credentials, biometric failures, and software compatibility are the most common app-lock problems.

  • The lock option is missing: Confirm that a device screen lock is enabled, search Settings, and check for operating-system and app updates.
  • The app is unsupported: Use a protected space, separate profile, parental control, or full-device lock.
  • The password or PIN is forgotten: Use the official reset process for the exact credential requested.
  • Face or fingerprint recognition fails: Clean the sensor, retry in suitable lighting, or use the backup device credential.
  • The app opens without prompting: Review the lock-delay setting, close the app fully, lock the device, and test again.
  • The feature stopped working after an update: Restart the device, install current app and system updates, then review the lock setting.

Do not remove an app until important data is confirmed as backed up or synchronized. Deleting an app can remove information stored only on the device.
