How to Set Up an Authenticator App

If possible, keep the setup page open on a second screen. In the authenticator, choose the option to add an account and scan the QR code shown by the account provider.
If scanning is not possible, use the setup key displayed by the provider. Enter it only in the authenticator app, and never send the QR code or key to another person.

If the code is about to change, wait for the next one. A code that expires while being entered may be rejected. Do not reuse the previous code; enter the newly displayed code instead.
Lost Phone, Missing Codes, and Recovery
Start with a recovery code saved when two-factor authentication was enabled. If none is available, select an approved secondary method already attached to the account, such as a security key, passkey, trusted device, or another verification option offered on the official recovery screen.
If you still have the old phone, use the authenticator’s documented transfer or export process before erasing it. Confirm that several transferred entries work before removing the old copies. A backup may require the same app account, encryption password, or device access used when it was created.
If no approved method works, begin recovery through the account provider’s official sign-in help or account recovery page. Contact that provider, not the authenticator publisher, when the locked account belongs to another service. Never pay or disclose a password to someone claiming they can bypass verification.
Common Authentication App Problems
Incorrect codes: Make sure you selected the correct account entry and did not confuse similar usernames. Wait for a fresh code and try once more.
Time mismatch: TOTP depends on accurate device time. Turn on automatic date, time, and time-zone settings, then reopen the app.
Unavailable backup: Confirm that you are using the expected app account and restore method. If the backup cannot be opened, use the account provider’s recovery options.
QR-code error: Increase screen brightness, clean the camera lens, and keep the entire code visible. If offered, enter the setup key manually. A QR code already used or replaced may require restarting setup.
Unexpected request: Reject any approval prompt or code request you did not initiate. Do not give the displayed code to a caller or message sender. Change the account password through its official security settings if you suspect an attempted sign-in.
